The Arrogant Stork

One day, a Stork walked with graceful and elegant steps along a small river, its eyes focused on the clear water, its long neck ready to catch fish for its morning meal. At that time, the clear river was full of swimming fish, but the Stork felt a bit arrogant that morning.

"I don't want to eat the small fish," said the Stork. "Those small fish are not worthy of being eaten by me."

A slightly larger fish swam past it.

"No, no," said the Stork. "I don't want to trouble myself to open my beak and eat a fish that size."

The sun began to climb higher; the day grew later, and the small fish swam away to the deeper, cooler middle of the river.

"Where are those fish?" said the Stork. "Why did those fish move over there (to the middle of the river)?"

A frog hopped by and said, "You arrogant Stork! Earlier you didn't want to eat the small fish because you only wanted to eat bigger fish, but when a big fish passed right in front of you, you didn't eat that either."

The Stork replied, "I didn't want to trouble myself by opening my beak to eat that big fish."

"You truly are an arrogant and boastful Stork," said the Frog.

The Stork, seeing no more fish, was forced to be content with eating small snails at the river's edge.
